A lifetime of window performance
Performing regular window maintenance is important to provide a lifetime of lasting, worry-free performance. A stuck sash or chipped paint may be a minor issue, but if not cared for, it can easily become a bigger issue. By following these home window maintenance tips, you can prevent major window problems preserve the quality of your windows for many years to come.
Cleaning and protection
- Avoid using glass cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol. They may seem to produce a more intense clean, but in reality, they can leave streaks and even a thin film that attracts dust.
- No matter how stubborn stuck-on materials may be, never use a razor or any other kind of blade to scrape them off. This can cause permanent scratches.
- To clean your windows, use a soft, lint-free wipe when rubbing a solution of one part distilled vinegar to 10 parts warm water. A microfiber cloth is ideal but a gentle and clean paper towel can work just as well. Rub from multiple directions to help avoid streaking.
- If you still have streaks after you’ve cleaned your window, simply rinse with clear water to help remove any of the remaining cleaning solution.
Caulking and Sealants
Sealant or caulking around your windows helps ensure a watertight seal. If any part of the window sealant is cracked, broken or missing, it needs to be addressed immediately. Cracked window sealant can let in water and even minor leaks can cause permanent damage. Inspect window caulking regularly, especially in the places where sealant problems are common – the bottom corners of windows and in between windows.
Fit and air infiltration
As your windows age, the more likely they don’t fit as well as on the day they were installed. Exposure to the elements, changing temperatures, and general wear and tear can cause subtle changes to the size and shape of your windows and window frames. Homes settle over the years too, which can cause similar problems to window openings that were once an ideal fit. Inspect windows for any significant changes in fit as it may signal a time to consider replacement to maximize energy efficiency and protection against the elements.
